President's father passes away
Mr Abela, left, with President and Mrs Margaret Abela (centre) and Mrs Lucarda Abela after the swearing in of Dr Abela as President in April last year.
President George Abela's father, George has died, aged 84.
He passed away at Mater Dei Hospital at 12.30 pm. His wife Lucarda and the President were by his side.
Mr Abela's deteriorating condition meant that the President could not attend the funeral Mass for the Prime Minister's father, held this morning. Mrs Abela attended instead.
Mr Abela lived most of his life in Qormi and used to be a port worker.
The Nationalist and Labour parties, as well as Alternattiva Demokratika, expressed their condolences.
The PN said the late Mr Abela used to represent the genuine love of a father towards his children. Through personal sacrifices and hard work, he did his utmost for his children to live a better life and be of service to their country.
The PL said that Opposition leader Joseph Muscat personally contacted Dr Abela as soon as he heard the news to express his and his party's condolences.

At first sight I had the impression that there was some confusion. The father of the Prime Ministers dies at the age of 89 then the father of President George Abela at the age of 83. No, no confusion at all. Both fathers left this vale of tears simultaneously so to say. Both the President and the Prime minister are humans and suffer as humans. Perhaps they suffer a bit more. In view of their respective position they regret not to have had enough time to spend near their loved one. We all leave our work for a few days when our parents pass through such a proof not the Prime Minister and the President, they only assist the last few minutes before their loved ones depart to a better life.
May God have mercy on both deceased fathers and give the necessary strength to both President and prime Minister to proceed with their responsibilities.

Condolences to the President and the Prime Minister. They should be really proud they had parents who loved them educated them and saw them rise in high offices. These are true worthy families which have seen war, hunger, and human suffering. And yet they remained a true united family. That is the true catholic spirit of these islands. May God reward these parents for all the sacrifices and good they made throughout their whole lives, while keeping united within their families. May they serve as examples to all of us instead of clamouring for divorces. May they now rest in peace.

The last few weeks have been traumatic for Malta.
After losing my own father just last year (aged 61), I do feel for those who have lost loved ones recently.
I realise now, just how important it is (especially for men) to talk about their loss.
