No applications for courses in nursing refused as yet - university
No applicants have been refused a place to date on the B.Sc. [Hons] Nursing and the Preparatory Course for the Diploma in Nursing, the University said.
It said in a statement numbers on both nursing courses could not be finalised at present as the university had to wait for the results of the MATSEC resits which were normally published at the end of September.
The total number of 165 applicants would be accepted on the two nursing courses (B.Sc. [Hons] Nursing and the Preparatory Course for the Diploma in Nursing), it said adding that this figure was based on the number of clinical placements and the number of mentors available to the student nurses.
Clinical placements in paediatrics and maternity were particularly difficult to fulfil and such placements were being used to the absolute maximum. But to stretch these placements any further would jeopardise the standard of the education provided to students, the university said.
The University clarified that applications were received up to the published deadline of July 23 at 12.30 p.m.
Only those who tried to apply online after the deadline, for any course with a limited number, were informed that applications could no longer be accepted.
It said that 228 individuals submitted their application for nursing courses up to the deadline, is contrary to what the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses had stated, that when the limited number of 140 was reached, the university refused any further applications online.

So if there were 228 applications and only 165 will be accepted what will happen to the other 63 who have already applied and the others who could be able to apply after the results of the resits. Will they be refused? Is the University playing with words, they have not yet been refused but they will be refused.

Some contributors are arguing about foreign nurses and the language problem. I am not a linguistic but listening to some of the university students one wonders what language they are using. And there are those who speak only in English as if they are above the general public.

Nurses are in great demand around the world, it's not easy to find a replacement with foreign nurses, unless the State is willing to employ an interpriter with every nurse, so spending twise as much in employing foreigeners.Plus paying their air fairs to go home and back on regular bases. It is inhumain seperating them from their families, unless they will settle here for good!!!!

1. deadlines are deadlines, discipline is discipline
2. results published in September are results of resits (giving a second chance to students that is!)
3. waiting for September results is giving opportunities to a larger amount of students to make it.
May me all realise that shooting statements left right and centre without being fully informed is nothing less than making a disservice to students/applicants

Mr.Debono I think that you are shooting statements and yes Mr.Cassar is right since those courses which do not have a numerus clause had a longer closing date. With all this shortage of nurses all applications should have been accepted and not refused, prosit MUMN keep up the good work

HI UNIVERSITY
IF WE ARE IN SO DIRE A NEED FOR NURSES, THE CLOSING DATE SHOULD NOT BE AN IMPEDIMENT FOR APPLYING.
I REMEMBER CASES, A FEW YEARS AGO, WHEN APPLLICATION QUALIFICATIONS WERE CHANGED TO ACCOMODATE SPECIAL STUDENTS. REMEMBER?
WHAT TYPE OF GOVT/UNIV PLANNING IS THIS WHEN THE EDUC SYSTEM PROVIDES THE MUCH NEEDED STUDENTS, BUT THE UNIV HAS NO PLACE FOR THEM !!!!
AND THEN WE IMPORT NURSES !!!!

And you would prefer someone local who cannot even do such a simple task as to apply within a deadline, than a foreigner? What a joke.

@ S.Zammit, Yes I would prefer someone who was late in applying than a foreigner who cannot speak English let alone Maltese. I experienced trying to comunicate with one of these foreign nurses, it's a good thing there were Maltese nurses around cause the patient would have been left with an empty drip bottle. And there is the question of how valid are their qualifications.

Why publish the results at the end of September when students have to apply before and have to start University at the beginning of October? What if the results are not published by the end of September? Whom do the University Profs want to take for a ride?
