Funeral of Gigi Gonzi held
The funeral of Gigi Gonzi, the Prime Minister's father, was held this morning at Our Lady of Mt Carmel Sanctuary in Valletta, a few metres from where Mr Gonzi lived for much of his life.
Mr Gonzi passed away yesterday at Mater Dei Hospital. He was 89.
Mass praesente cadavere was celebrated by Fr Martin Schembri, who praised Mr Gonzi for his strong faith and values, as well as his humour.
Margaret Abela, the President's wife, led the congregation, which included the Gonzi family, MPs from both sides of the House and former President Eddie Fenech Adami.

I have known Gigi since the late sixties. At the law courts, where he was employed as clerk to magistrates, he was always helpful and very jovial. He was always ready with all sorts of bargains. He was also very proud of his family. His down to earth character made him a true friend to all who knew him. May the good God give him eternal rest among his fold. My sincere condolences to all his family.

Knowing Mr. Gigi Gonzi was an honour.
I am proud to have had such an honour.
We used to meet along the Bugibba promenade and we used to spend some time talking .
In him one discovered what it means to be humble, what it means to be content , what it means to always look at the bright side of life, what it means to always confide in the Lord for what every day life brings.
He was a man who always mingled among common folk . He was respected by all for his welcoming jestures of kindness.
He was a very good listener and never ever uttered a word against anyone ...anyone.
May he rest in peace .
My Condolences to all his family .
