The office of the Commissioner for Children recently organised two courses, one in Malta and another in Gozo.

The Rights 4U course in Malta was held at the Marsaxlokk Youth Hostel , while the one in Gozo was held at Manresa Retreat House, Victoria.

The Gozo course was attended by 31 youngsters aged between 13 and 15, and had as its theme ‘Combating poverty and social exclusion’.

The interactive course included various activities. Children not only learnt about their rights, but also actively explored and engaged in discussions. The participants, who were supported by Commissioner for Children Helen D’Amato, were given the tools to be able to stand up for their rights and to participate in matters of social concern to a higher degree.

The course also focused on personal development, including critical thinking skills, social abilities, respect, responsibility, inclusion and independence.

Ms D’Amato and the participants later visited the Gozo Ministry where they met Minister Giovanna Debono who presented a donation to the Commissioner towards the expenses incurred in organising this course.

Ms Debono said the ministry and the Church in Gozo had recently allocated premises to be used as a crisis intervention centre for people experiencing problems.
