Peter Grech appointed Attorney General

Lawyer Peter Grech will succeed Attorney General Silvio Camilleri, who will be sworn in as Chief Justice next week.

Dr Grech, 53, who occupied the post of Deputy-Attorney General, graduated doctor of laws in 1979 and was called to the Bar in 1980 when he went into private practice.

Following a break to work as an export sales manager between 1980 and 1981, he returned to legal practice and joined the Attorney General’s Office in 1983 as Counsel to the Republic, being promoted to Senior Counsel to the Republic in 1986. He was subsequently appointed assistant to the Attorney General in 1994 and, finally, Deputy Attorney General in 2005.

Dr Grech lectures at the University in media, administrative and public law.

He is married to Mariella née Delia and has two children, Ylenia and Daniel.

As Malta’s 22nd Chief Justice, Dr Camilleri succeeds Vincent De Gaetano, who assumes his office of judge of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg on September 20.
