Migrants, sailors in community work
Volunteers from the USS Laboon dedicated their free time to two community projects in a gesture of appreciation for the hospitality they received.
One team joined Maltese volunteers to renovate the living quarters at the Marsa open centre and another worked to clear garbage left on the beach and in the sea at Selmun Bay.
The US Navy officers, some 20 of them, were joined by African migrants who reside at the Marsa open centre to give some rooms a fresh lick of paint.

That was less than 2 years ago. The re-vamp cost the taxpayer several million €uro. And it is in need of renovation! You have to try very hard to destroy a place in 18months.
Sean Grima, it is things like this that make my cynical, bitter and egoistic, and with good reason too. Over 90% of the people feel that way as well and would like to see the back of these unwelcome squatters. 90% may be a minority for you, but then you never attack the argument but the person. Why don't you tell us what's in it for you? I could start calling you names, but I don't have to, you expose yourself very well by your writings.

Ninety per cent eh? And who commissioned that no-doubt highly scientific poll? Norman Lowell? Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici? Josie Muscat?

If as you say nobody takes any notice of what we say, why do you bother to answer our comments. why should other people do jobs for them which they can do themselves, what do we Maltese owe them, we never took them as slaves, or robbed their country, please answer.

We help them because they are fellow human beings who at the moment need help. And that help is coming from people who CHOOSE to devote their own time to help others. That way people like you will not moan how their tax money is being "wasted".

J. J. Borg they are ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS with absolutely NO right to be in Malta. They must be repatriated whatever it take because one way or the other they shall be expelled whether you and your ilk like it or not. And that includes Sean Grima.

are you saying that these people are so helpless, that they cannot keep their surrounding ,clean and tidy, if that is the case , what benefits are we going to get from them? and by the way, I never mentioned, that my tax money was being wasted on these professionals in my comments, but once you mentioned it I think there is some truth in it.

they are deluded ancients. they have been repeating this expulsion nonsense for months, and not one immigrant has been expelled - obviously, since nobody takes notice of them, which in turn makes them more frustrated and angry.

JRS, followed by many local journalists, tried to uplift the image of illegal immigrants in Malta by calling them "professionals". We recall phrases like: "XY, an engineer by profession" or "AB, a teacher by profession"... Never mind that we never saw the certificates to prove these professions. Sometimes we were told that XY had to leave his country in a hurry and could not get hold of his certificates. The Commissioner for Refugees has heard many such like stories.
While these stories are hard to believe, I think Gaddafi did exaggerate a bit when he described African economic migrants as "starving and uneducated". According to ANSA (30 August) he said:
''Attualmente subiamo una immigrazione dall'Africa verso l'Europa ma in questo momento si tratta di una cosa molto pericolosa: non sappiamo che cosa succedera', quale sara' la reazione degli europei bianchi e cristiani di fronte a questo movimento di africani affamati e non istruiti''.

This is good news. I'm sure some of the illegal immigrants took advantage of the occasion to enquire about how to emigrate (legally this time) to the USA.

With so many hundreds of idle residents, it speaks volumes when it has to be someone form outside to have to clean and paint at the Marsa Open Centre. Oh, I forgot, according to the JRS these are all professional people and so that is beneath them.
What would Malta do without these immigrants?
