USS Laboon crew members lend a hand

Volunteers from the USS Laboon have dedicated some of their free time to two community projects in a gesture of appreciation for the hospitality they received during their brief stop at Malta.

One team of crew members joined with local volunteers to renovate living quarters at the Marsa Open Center, while another worked to clear garbage left on the beach and in the sea at Selmun Bay.

The 20 or so US Navy volunteers were joined by African migrants who reside at the Marsa Open Centre and together they refreshed the paintwork in several rooms which had been damaged earlier by an accidental fire.

The beach clean-up at Selmun Bay was conducted in collaboration with the Mellieħa council. This was the second time that US Navy volunteers participated in a clean-up project at Selmun Bay.

The mayor expressed his appreciation for the willingness of the crew to give up their free time to assist the council in its efforts to preserve the beauty of Selmun Bay.

The volunteers enjoyed the sparkling waters of the bay with a well-deserved swim as soon as they finished their work.

The USS Laboon leaves Malta tomorrow.

People at the Marsa Open Centre are not locals
And I actually got into a quarrel during the Lija village feast, when a tourist(with a nice British accent) threw a cigarette butt on the ground, and when I asked her to pick it up, she refused as "no one will fine her here". Then again she was quite drunk I guess. And no she wasn't young - I'd say 40ish.

L.Hood If some of the English were as much as 0.001% as clean as Maltese people they would apply for the Guinness book of records.

The Question is why do Maltese wait for US marines to help out the residents of the Marso Open Centre. The Question is why Anthony Cassar, aren't you there helping out?

Robert Azzopardi Mr Cassar is correct. The illegal immigrants were given a brand new never used block originally built for our soldiers at Hal Safi. They turned it into a pigsty within one week. So do you expect us taxpayers to continue paying for them when they do not take care of their living quarters? The government must send them back because in time they will turn all Malta into a pigsty.

@Robert Azzopardi
Dear Mr. Azzopardi - no one is keeping you from driving up to the Marsa open center to help the residents whitewash their bedrooms! but since you asked why am i not helping them out, i can give you two reasons;
1) i prefer to help out others who really need themselves, not lazy bums who spend all day sitting outside the open center doing nothing (when they could easily be cleaning up where they are living)
2) I am busy enough at work, paying my taxes to be used (in part) to provide for illegal immigrants staying in the Marsa open center.
