First Anglo-Scottish clash in UEFA Cup

Along the years, English and Scottish clubs have built an exciting rivalry in UEFA competitions.

The UEFA Cup competition gave lots of joy to UK teams, most probably for the way these same clubs have always been motivated by their own knock-out competitions, the FA Cup and the Scottish Cup.

This second analysis of the UEFA Cup takes off from 1962-63 when the competition was titled the Inter Cities Fairs Cup. The tournament saw the first English-Scottish duel in the tournament, the meeting between Dunfermline and Everton.

Everton, in their first ever appearance in Europe, played at Goodison Park in the first round first leg and won 1-0. But the Scots succeeded in turning the tables upon their rivals with a 2-0 victory in front of their own fans.

Hibernian were the last to bow out, reaching the last eight as they went down to eventual winners Valencia.

Other British clubs that featured in the first round:

Celtic lost to Valencia 4-6 on aggregate (away 2-4, home 2-2).

Hibernian saw off Staevnet 7-2 (home 4-0, away 3-2).

Second round: Valencia-Dunfermline 4-0, 2-6 (6-6), Scots lose decider in Lisbon 0-1; Utrecht XI-Hibernian 0-1, 1-2 (1-3).

Quarter-final: Valencia-Hibernian 5-0, 1-2 (6-2).

The Spanish domination persisted in 1963-64 when Real Zaragoza and Valencia reached the final.

Arsenal and Sheffield Wednesday were the English representatives that season but failed to go beyond the second hurdle. Their remarkable aggregate score in the first round augured well for the rest of the competition but they still met their waterloo to Belgian and German outfits.

First round: Lausanne-Hearts 2-2, 2-2 (4-4), the Scots lost the play-off 2-3 after extra-time that was played at their rivals ground.

Glentoran (Northern Ireland)-Partick Thistle 1-4, 0-3 (1-7).

Staevnet Copenhagen XI-Arsenal 1-7, 3-2 (4-9).

DOS Utrecht (Netherlands)-Sheffield Wednesday 1-4, 1-4 (2-8).

Second round: Arsenal-RFC Liegeois (Belgium) 1-1, 1-3 (2-4).

Partick Thistle-Spartak Brno (Czechoslovakia) 3-2, 0-4 (3-6).

FC Cologne-Sheffield Wednesday 3-2, 2-1 (5-3).

United in semis

In the 1964-65 tournament, Manchester United managed to claim a place in the semi-finals, bowing out in a play-off at their rivals’ home. The competition also witnessed the first all-English clash between United and Everton.

The bizarre episode of the tournament was when two sides were given a bye in the quarter-finals.

At this time the Scottish sides were famous for their remarkable comebacks as Kilmarnock highlighted this occurrence, below.

First round: Dunfermline-Orgryte IS (Sweden) 4-2, 0-0 (4-2).

Although two English clubs, Leeds and Chelsea, reached the semis in 1965-66 it was another all-Spanish showdown in the final.

The Spaniards made sure that the English will not have a representative as they saw them off in the last four.

Dunfermline had also made giant steps as they were present in the quarter-finals as well. The first English-Italian ties occurred for the first time in the 1965-66 tournament.
