The San Ġwann local council has employed wardens to make sure that people pick up the mess left behind by their dogs. It’s a move in the right direction. But my question is: Who is watching the council to make sure they do their duties as well, providing us with street cleaning, emptying of public bins, removing and replacing broken skips?

I have often phoned or gone over to the council to inform them of the state of the environment in our street and about the skip which required two hands to open since one hinge was broken and the foot leaver wouldn’t work. In the meantime the skip broke completely and the skip people threw the whole thing away, without replacing it. It’s been more than a week now and the rubbish is on the street, including plastic bags full of dog pooh, while the rats are having a feast.

In the upper part of Triq il-Baħar I-Iswed there is no street cleaning taking place at all. The public bin near the little chapel is overflowing, rubbish is scattered all around, including the plastic bags full of dog pooh, since there are no dog bins which can be used by owners.

I think this council deserves a ticket!
