Forthcoming EU-related activities

September 13, Risk and management of current and future storm surges, Hamburg.

Storm surges represent a major type of natural hazard, frequently causing losses of lives and substantial economic damages. A recent OECD global study of risk of extreme surge-induced floods in 136 port cities suggested an increase in exposure of people and assets to storm surge risk by 2070.

The event’s objective is to work towards a common perception of the key issues including the role of mitigation and adaptation. Attendees will discuss such diverse topics as: coastal engineering, coastal zone and river basin management, urban, coastal, marine, and emergency planning, coastal communities and harbour authorities, operational oceanography and coastal geology, climate research and storm surge modelling, weather services, and insurance and finance sector concerns.

September 15 – 17, Visions of sustainable urban energy systems, Stuttgart.

This conference will look into new energy concepts which are needed to improve the energy efficiency of urban areas, especially in the field of buildings. On the first day of the conference, a presentation on how to use the newest renewable supply simulations for communal energy management is planned. Innovative energy supply concepts using solar thermal, energy management strategies, biomass and photovoltaics will be discussed on the two subsequent conference days.

September 17 – 18, Fourth International Workshops on Foundations and Techniques for Open Source Software Certification, Pisa.

Over the past decade, open source software (OSS) has had a global impact on the way software systems and software-based services are developed, distributed and deployed. OSS has been praised for low development and maintenance costs, rapid code turnover, and reliability.

The workshop will bring together researchers from academia and industry who are broadly interested in the quality assessment of open source software projects, ultimately leading to the establishment of coherent certification processes at different levels. Foundational, methodological and pragmatic issues will be addressed through standard technical communications and reports on concrete case studies and experimental data.

October 7 – 8, MORE4NRG Seminar 2010, Pescara, Abruzzo.

With the 20-20-20 goals now incorporated in the Europe 2020 Strategy, the EU is pursuing an ambitious climate and energy policy leading to sustainable territories. Sustainable territories however, can only be achieved if all regional and local stakeholders make calculated efforts through intra-regional cooperation.

Intra-regional cooperation is crucial for regions, cities and municipalities and sets out a new way of thinking for better quality of life and well-being.

This form of cooperation, although local or regional, will serve as a model for the creation of sustainable territories at the European level.
