A Nigerian immigrant has been jailed for four months for trying to use a false travel document to escape to Italy on Sunday.

Joel Ubah, 27, admitted before Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna that he had bought a false passport from Enoma Osakpamwan, another Nigerian immigrant, and planned to use it to travel to Bologna.

Mr Ubah resides in Ħal Far’s “tent city”.

Mr Osakpamwan, 34, was also arraigned yesterday and charged with attempting to help people leave Malta illegally.

He pleaded not guilty to selling a false passport to Mr Ubah and Magistrate Apap Bologna remanded him in custody.

Police Inspector Geoffrey Azzopardi prosecuted.

Lawyer Cedric Mifsud appeared for the two men as legal aid.
