Boy, 6, witnesses hold-up at Paola shop
No one was injured yesterday evening when an armed and hooded person held-up a shop in Paola, the police said.
The 35-year-old female salesgirl from Zejtun was accompanied by her six year old son during the incident during which no one was injured.
The police said this morning the thief left the shop, in Hal Safliena Street ,and escaped in a vehicle that was parked outside the shop, in which there were another two people.
Duty magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna is holding an inquiry.

When I read the article my first reaction was like most of you who commented below. I was also the first to judge but if you think about it we do not know the whole story! What the burglars did was wrong, especially when a child was involved, we cannot imagine the trauma he must be going through and I think psychology services should be given to both mother and child, but please don't get religion into this!!! Being a Catholic, a Muslim, a Buddhist, a pagan, an orthodox etc all share the same values, no religion allows killing, stealing, adultery and so on! I myself is a born catholic but I do not have to practice my 10 commandments everyday before I go to bed not to do certain acts it is just moral values! Also punishment should be given according to the crime and NOT according to race or cultures!

I cannot understand why comments appearing on nearly every article appearing here, ranging from sexual harassment to a hold-up are somehow linked to religion. It appears to me that the commentators here are totally obsessed by relgion, or is it the Maltese in general?

As far as tagging is concerned and it working in the uk i have to disagree, like everything it has its faults! It does work but if the person concerned wants to get rid and its done at the rite time they can cut it off and have a 12hr head start on police etc, i know because i know someone who did it and is still living without it!

Since one is more shocked when a crime is committed by a fellow countryman, considering we're Catholics, I would think it makes more sense for the penalty to be doubled or tripled if the criminal is Maltese. What you think? I think street sweeping in the hot sun and cleaning public areas under supervision would teach these criminals a lesson. I hope the government intends to amend our laws to facilitate justice and this means that the criminals compensate the victims in full AND carry out work in the community for crimes that do not involve violence.
I think crimes that involve violence should be compensated by a public trashing in the village square.

Very primitive thinking indeed Ms. Zammit.
The guy who committeed the robbery has broken the rules of the state and those of the Church (if he is Catholic after all). The state should see to it that he gets the right punishment for breaking the laws of the state and the Church can interdict him if it likes. The (state) law is equal for all and should remain so whether the criminal is catholic, muslim or of any other religion. This mixing up of Church and State is only doing harm to the pathetic situation the country is already in.
If you would like to live in a Church controlled state, please go to the Vatican.
As to your enlightened idea of public trashings, it may be a good idea. One day a man said that he wanted a Switzerland in the Mediterranean. You seem to want an Iran in the Mediterranean. Could be a tourist attraction you never know....

Maria you claim you are Catholic in your first sentence, but then you end your comment by suggesting public Thrashing (I assume you mean Thrashing as otherwise you would be suggesting to have the criminals thrown into the public skips !!!) What the courts should introduce is Tagging, whereby any person who has been let out of Prison on Parole or is handed a suspended sentence is Electronically Tagged and his movements and whereabouts are known to the police at all times. This system has worked very well in the UK and the US and it does stop criminals breaking the law knowing that they are being monitored 24/7

Maria Zammit your reasoning is totally the opposite Maria. Foreigners should get triple punishment and deported after serving their sentence. While we have to lump Maltese criminals we don't have to lump foreign ones.

These are all ' petty crimes ' as far as the official statistics are concerned.
But for those affected they are blows to the heart and soul.

Keeping them in jail costs money, better kick them out of the country first and make sure they never come back.

If they are foreigners deport them ? Why jump to such conclusions straight away, are Maltese not capable of such crimes ? Not so long ago there were Malteseover here in London running all kinds or organised crimes whose numbers far outweigh the crime you experience in Malta from foreigners. Put your brain in gear before you blurt out such comments.
