There seems to be an effort to pressure the government to extend the retirement age and improve the pensions of judges. Inasmuch as one seems to contradict the other (if I had a better pension I would want to retire earlier), I will not of course begrudge such improvements to judges.

An eminent retired judge articulated in favour of an extension in the retirement age (of judges) basing his argument on the fact that medical science has so advanced that life expectancy is now much longer.

Indeed, life expectancy has thankfully increased – but across the board, not only for judges.

It is hoped that our parliamentarians will not legislate for the creation of yet another special breed, aside from themselves that is, but, when they find the time, they should perhaps legislate to extend the retirement age of all able bodied workers, at their option; and also, if that is at all possible, to improve all miserly pensions since even I, like so many others, am only entitled to the pension payable under the Social Security Act, after working for more than 43 years.
