John Lennon’s toilet sold for nearly 10 times its guide price during an auction.
The porcelain lavatory was used by the music legend for three years when he lived at Tittenhurst Park in Berkshire between 1969 and 1972.
It was expected to sell for just £1,000 but an overseas investor paid £9,500 for it at the 33rd annual Beatles Convention in Liverpool.
Fab Four expert and auction organiser Stephen Bailey said: “It is unbelievable.
“We had bids coming in from all over the place but it went to a private overseas buyer.”
The buyer’s premium on the toilet was 10 per cent.
John Lennon gave the toilet to builder John Hancock, telling him to “use it as a plant pot”, after he bought a new one.
It was stored in a shed at Mr Hancock’s home for 40 years until he died recently.
One of the singer’s rarest albums, a mono-sound copy of Two Virgins, which he recorded with Yoko Ono, fetched £2,500. When the avant-garde LP was released in November 1968 it was notable for being sold in brown paper bags to cover the controversial sleeve featuring the couple naked.
Also sold was a small harmonica belonging to John Lennon’s son, Julian.
