It was unacceptable for the Libyan leader to urge Europeans to convert to convert to Islam during a visit to Italy, Alternattiva Demokratika said in a statement

It called upon Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Opposition leader Joseph Muscat to stand up to such tactics.

EU spokesman Arnold Cassola said:

"It totally unacceptable that Muammar Gaddafi, whilst visiting Italy, has urged Europeans to convert to Islam.

“As a political leader of his country Mr Gaddafi should understand that, in civilised democracies, we do not mix politics with religion."

Prof. Cassola said Col Gaddafi also asked the EU for at least €5 billion for Europe not to become Africanised through migration.

“The European Union should not give in to this blackmail and indeed should insist on Gaddafi and Libya signing and ratifying the Geneva convention on human rights instead," he said.

He said that it was about time that Dr Gonzi and Mr Muscat spoke up against the disrespect shown by Libya to basic human rights.
