Music educators to form association
Music educators will be forming an association that will aim to increase standards and encourage children to learn more about music.
The Association of Music Educators in Malta is expected to be set up next month when the committee members will be selected during a meeting.
The association will ensure that teachers’ voices and concerns are heard in the interest of both educators and students.
Mariella Cassar, as education officer who is helping set up the association, explained that as from this year government primary schools will teach basic theory to students. This would mean children would learn how to read music.
Schools would also be encouraged to set up choirs to participate in an annual choir festival, she said.
Negotiations were also underway with the University of Malta to introduce a Matsec O level in music.

I would like to congratulate the setup of this association to work in favour of music education and appreciation amongst children and teenagers. I hope also that the association will work for better standards of teaching music as an entertaining form too. I remember my times at school writing a stupid comprehension and "drawing" the outline of instruments during the so called music lesson. I do not expect that students will be musicians but at least some basics of music history and appreciation. Although I am not a music teacher ..you have all my backing as a local singer. All the best!

well done! brilliant initiative! let's just hope that the educ. dept. employs enough music teachers to reach all schools in all colleges and not have the same old situation where not enough teachers have to juggle a large number of schools and ending up not seeing enough of any! more peripatetic teachers are needed and not less! especially in ict and technology! let's hope we see an increase of peripatetic teachers of all subjects taught in primary schools as they do a brilliant job!
