The Stella Maris College Scout Group recently held its annual summer camp at the Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq scout campsite.

This summer’s Troop and Unit week-long camp programme consisted mainly of water and sea-related activities. Scouts worked on their Lifesaver badge, which required them to learn how to throw a rope to rescue a drowning swimmer, and to swim with them back to shore.

Troop members also enjoyed swimming and snorkelling, and took part in a half-day activity of raft-building and racing. They also went canoeing.

The scouts tried out various survival techniques, including fishing with rudimentary rods and lines. The traditional obstacle course also featured, as did various water games.

During the ‘International Night’, as preparation for their Lands of Adventure badge, scouts cooked a number of recipes from different countries. Furthermore, all scouts participated in a range of activities aimed at raising eco-awareness.

Meanwhile, this year the cubs adopted a Shrek theme. All their activities, including water games and campfire stunts, were centred around the Shrek series, with all the cubs dressing up as the film’s main characters.

The camp was visited by the canine section of the Malta Police Force, who gave an awareness talk on the role of dogs in the police force. This was inevitably followed by a show of canine handling skills.

The camp ended with the campfire evening. Parents were treated to a camp-cooked dinner, after which a scout talent show evening was organised.
