The beauty of marriage, all will agree, is that it is hopefully a path to total love, to an infinite love, to a love that springs eternal.
In fact, there is a beautiful intimacy of people involved which must be nature’s greatest triumph. So it’s admittedly a bit tragic to see apparently shattered mirrors of hopes and dreams covering much of the globe.
And yet all is not lost: hope springs eternal, and the final word is more beautiful still. It is the beauty of the science of the cross, which is beautiful as a science precisely because it is involved very realistically in the concrete love of the other as a final act of faith and fidelity, even when enmity seems to have gained an upper hand in hearts. For, in practice, forgiveness is the only structural remedy.
