The information which led to the corruption charged against San Gwann mayor's son this morning was passed on to the police by Nationalist Party general secretary Paul Borg Olivier, the party said.

In a statement, the party said it accepted the resignation of Joe Agius from mayor of San Gwann and from a councillor representing the party, with immediate effect.

It said Dr Borg Olivier passed on the information to the police as soon as he received it, in line with the party’s code of ethics.

It was also a political and legal moral obligation to report serious allegations and the party expected that everyone working within it acted with the highest ethical and moral standards.

The party said it enforced its code of ethics seriously and demanded that work within it and on its behalf was inspired by the values declared in the code.
