I was surprised to read Transport Malta saying that “many roads are not designed for 80kph” (August 25). This should read: “Roads are unsafe at any speed, especially if you are driving a motorcycle.”

If one manages to survive the total disregard for rules and regulations and the lack of courtesy and road ethics, one has to face the inadequate road surface. The lack of road maintenance (resurfacing) hardly provides any traction at all. This is evident in the shiny surface of our roads caused by wear. Even some recently surfaced roads (such as the Marsascala bypass) are dangerous due to patches where the tar used for new roads comes up to the surface. This is not to mention loose gravel, oily patches left by worn-out vehicles, exhaust fumes in the face and airborne dust from uncovered trucks.

Transport Malta has the audacity to try and fool people by saying the design is not right.

Instead of tackling the problems and giving us tax- and road licence-payers what we deserve – proper roads – Transport Malta solves the problem by lowering speeds.

Very clever indeed.
