An Egyptian man arraigned over the possession of opium and morphine yesterday admitted to giving the police a false name.

Walid Mohammed Ibrahim Said Ahmed, 28, told Magistrate Edwina Grima his name was not the one on the charge sheet and he went on to give the court what he said were his real particulars.

Mr Said Ahmed was charged together with Adam Mohammed, 21, from Sudan, who shares a residence with him in Birżebbuġa.

They both pleaded not guilty to possessing morphine, codeine and opium in circumstances denoting they were not for their exclusive use.

The two were arrested along with another man on Tuesday night at City Gate in Valletta after policemen found more than a kilogramme of opium under a car seat.

They were remanded in custody.
