Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has written to US ambassador Douglas Kmiec, who was injured in a traffic accident on Wednesday, wishing him “a fast and complete recovery”.
Dr Gonzi wrote:
“I was deeply shocked to learn that you have been involved in a serious car accident in California, which unfortunately also involved the demise of Sr Mary Campbell from Our Lady of Malibu Catholic Church.
“Such unexpected and testing episodes do help us comprehend better the beauty of life and what is of value. It is comforting to know that your family is close to you at this difficult time.
“On behalf of the government and people of Malta, I sincerely wish you and Mgr John Sheridan a fast and complete recovery.”
Mr Kmiec, who has been ambassador to Malta since September 2009, was driving a Hyundai which drifted onto a dirt shoulder and struck a drainage ditch on Mulholland Highway east of Stokes Canyon Road. He was on holiday in California with his family.
Mr Kmiec, 58, suffered major injuries and was transported to a hospital.
Sister Mary Campbell, 74, was pronounced dead at the scene. Mgr John Sheridan, 94, was injured.
Mr Kmiec and Mgr Sheridan were flown to UCLA Medical Trauma Centre by helicopter.
