Man pleads not guilty to attempting to steal carriage

A man who was allegedly caught in the act of stealing a carriage was this morning granted bail against a personal guarantee of €1,000, after pleading not guilty.

Mario Caruana , 54, of Tarxien, was charged with attempting to steal the carriage from a farm in Naxxar.

Police sources said Mr Caruana, who has a passion for horses, turned up at the farm with another man, opened the gates, moved the carriage towards his van but when he was about to hook it to the van, he was caught by one of the farm’s owners who happened to be passing by and saw the gate open.

Realising that they had been caught, the two men took off but the owner took down the car’s registration number.

The police still do not know who the other man but investigations are continuing.

Mr Caruana, who was also ordered not to go to the Marsa horse races, told the police that the other man was an Arab he did not know.
