Three foreigners were caught in possession of more than a kilo of opium, a drug which could be refined into heroin.

The police said two Palestin-ians, a 30-year-old who lives in Kappara and a 29-year-old residing in Birżebbuġa, together with a Sudanese resident in Birżebbuġa, were caught with about 520 grams of opium hidden beneath the seat of a car at City Gate, Valletta on Tuesday night.

Another 590 grams were found in a search of a Birżebbuġa apartment shortly after.

Magistrate Anthony Vella has launched an inquiry.

Police investigations are underway.
