Two young men who tried to steal jewellery from a 64-year-old woman in Valletta on Sunday evening were arraigned and remanded in custody.

Charles Ryan Vella, 21, and Christopher Phillip Agius, 19, both from Paola, denied trying to steal the jewellery the woman was wearing at the time. They also denied seriously injuring her and damaging the jewellery.

Mr Vella pleaded not guilty to stealing a handbag on Friday and Mr Agius pleaded not guilty to breaching the conditions of a previous release, committing a crime during the operative period of a suspended jail term and relapsing.

Police Inspectors Pierre Micallef Grimaud and Michael Mallia prosecuted.

Lawyer Gianella Caruana Curran was defence counsel.
