A young man who allegedly stole 11 bags containing items worth over €2,000 from Pretty Bay, Birżebbuġa was yesterday given a suspended jail term and ordered to repay the victims.

Paul Falzon, 20, from Qormi got himself into a lot of trouble over the past few months, according to Police Inspector Anthony Portelli.

He admitted to a string of thefts that took place between July 20 and last Thursday from the same beach.

The bags contained mobile phones, digital cameras, wallets and cash, all adding up to €2,044 in value, the officer said.

Defence lawyer David Gatt asked Magistrate Anthony Vella to hand down a suspended jail term in order for his client to be given the chance to pay the victims back. The lawyer said his client had lost his job and needed to find another before being able to start payment.

The court handed down a one-year jail term suspended for three and ordered he be monitored by a probation officer to ensure he made good for the items stolen.
