I may have had my doubts about the outcry which the Labour Party created about the contract of the Delimara power station extension – the PL does, after all, have an interest in painting the situation black.

Then after the report by the Auditor General I started thinking that maybe the Labour opposition was not completely off the mark. Maybe there was something fishy in the affair, as Labour was saying. But the Nationalist government staunchly defended it all. Who was I to believe?

The claims and counter claims, as always happens in this country, left me reeling. But I have no doubt in my mind now. The PL’s concern turns out to be justified and the government’s defence of its administration hollow and deceptive.

The PL’s stand is now echo-ed by Brussels. Even the Euro-pean Commission is expressing doubts now and seeing irregularities. I can now see that the government did not investigate deeply only because it was the PL in opposition that was making the claims.

To give the PL any credibility in its claims would have harmed the Nationalist Party electorally. So the government forged ahead, ignoring the obvious.

Surely this was not what the Nationalist government should have done. Ignoring all the obvious signs, backed by so much that was obviously wrong, was against the national interest.

Even if only because so much money was involved while we are being made to pay such hefty energy bills because money is so short.

To the government, the PN’s interest came first. The government was not interested in doing things the right way. Its interest was to defend the party. I expected better of Lawrence Gonzi’s Administration.
