MPs should express clear opinions on divorce

In a recent interview with The Times, Labour MP Marlene Pullicino stated that she now backs divorce legislation, but what amazed me most was when she stated this: “I have spoken to many people, including priests and theologians, and they exonerated me of my guilt because I realised that legislating for divorce does not mean I am going against my Catholic beliefs.”

How could it be, I ask, that such priests are not aware of the contents of encyclicals or catechism of faith? How could they not realise what John Paul II clearly taught us in his encyclical Evangelium Vitas?

Also, MPs should clearly declare whether they are in favour of divorce or not because voters have a right to know. But then, our lawmakers, especially if they are Catholic, must not advance measures that go against the basic values of life and marriage between a man and a woman. Pope John Paul II said: “It is part of the Church’s mission not to give up, inviting all men and women of good will to build a society based upon fundamental and irrevocable values that respect human dignity.”

The Maltese Constitution gives as our official religion that of the Catholic faith. Therefore, if divorce is introduced by any government, it would go against our official faith, that is the Roman Catholic Apostolic Faith. I have noted that all, or the majority of, our politicians either kissed the Holy Cross or the Bible when they took their oath of office. They did not proclaim that they are non-Catholics or unbelievers or atheist but they all automatically indicated themselves as being either Catholics or Christians.

So go on, you electoral candidates, and declare what faith you have so that voters can decide beforehand! Because no man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon!

For this reason, then, voters (Christians/Catholics) cannot in conscience vote to elect certain candidates who would be promoting lifestyles or opinions that go against the teaching of Christ and His Church!
