Żejtun Corinthians recently held a four-day training camp in Sheffield. The 31-strong contingent, composed of 21 players and 10 technical staff and committee members, stayed at the Copthorne Hotel which is partly owned by Sheffield United.

The Corinthians contingent, headed by Member of Parliament Carmelo Abela, who is also the club’s secretary, were greeted by Andy Daykin and Mike Farnan, Corporate Director and Group Executive Director of Sheffield United respectively.

Żejtun, who will play in Division Two this season after completing a league and cup double in 2009/10, said in a statement that their training stint in Sheffield came about thanks to the sponsorship agreement the Malta Tourism Authority have with the English Championship club.

In addition to the training sessions, held at the Academy of Sheffield United, the Corinthians also played a friendly match against semi-professional team Hallam FC who have the oldest ground in the world and this year are celebrating their 150th anniversary. The match finished three-all.

During their stay in Sheffield, the Żejtun contingent also watched Sheffield United’s league match against Queens Park Rangers at Bramall Lane. Before kick-off, Kevin McCabe, chairman of Sheffield United, and Abela exchanged gifts to mark Żejtun’s visit to Sheffield.

The possibility of establishing a long-term partnership between the two clubs was also discussed between Abela and high-ranking Sheffield United officials.

Żejtun Corinthians’ trip to England was made possible thanks to the backing of several sponsors, namely Supreme Travel, Cassar Service Station, Schembri Bros., Roger’s Bakery, Tutto Sport, Nordic Bar, Sigma Paints Malta, Brownrigg Supplies & Services Ltd., Vandan Confectionery, Kastell Wine Bar and AF Signs.
