A Swedish student worker living at the Cerviola Hotel has been handed a one-year suspended jail term and a fine of €5,000 after he pleaded guilty to driving recklessly.

Eric Joakim Marklund, 20, also had his driving licence suspended for one-year.

Police Inspector Fabian Fleri told the court that last Saturday Mr Marklund was very drunk and drove up a one-way street in Marsascala, smashing into five oncoming cars.

The police arrested him and took him to the police station in Zabbar from where he momentarily managed to escape custody but was caught almost immediately.
