Carnival came early this year, with the advent of the Summer Grand Carnival held in Buġibba over the weekend.

The event, organised for the first time by the St Paul’s Bay local council and Catwalk Productions, brought out the winter floats with a twist of something new, in an amalgamation of the Maltese and the Gozitan winter festivities.

The two-day event included a carnival defile, dance groups and grotesque masks, as well as the very summery greasy pole.

The council was allocated special funds for the event.

Chris Said, Parliamentary Secretary for Local Councils, said summer carnivals were successful in other EU cities and this “experiment” in Malta would help the numerous commercial outlets in the area.
