Malta yesterday won the Mediterranean Drivers Trotting Championship for the first time. This competition, organised by the Mediterranean Horse Racing Union, came to an end at the weekend when the last two heats were held at the Voronezh Racetrack in Russia.

Tony Demanuele flew the flag for the Maltese team in Russia. He was first in the initial heat on Saturday, leading Russian horse Almanac to victory ahead of the French and Russian participants.

Yesterday, Demanuele finished sixth in the second heat. The race was won by the Italian representative in front of the Russian and Slovenian drivers. Thanks to Demanuele’s results in last weekend’s two heats, Malta claimed top spot in the championship by half-a-point from Italy and Serbia who finished joint second.

In Russia, Demanuele was accompanied by Marco Millo, from the Malta Racing Club (MRC). In a statement, the MRC Council congratulated all the drivers who represented our country in the 2010 Med. Championship.

“This success should encourage all the Maltese drivers to keep taking part in international competitions in the future,” the MRC Council said.
