A Marian Music Celebration of sacred music will be held at the Basilica of the Nativity of Our lady, Xagħra, on Tuesday at 7.30 p.m. by the Schola Cantorum Jubilate youth choir to mark the 10th anniversary of the choir’s foundation. The concert is free of charge and is being held under the patronage of President George Abela.
The choir and ensemble will be under the direction of Marouska Attard, who has been directing it since its inception. The repertoire will include pieces by Palestrina, Victoria, Gounod, Pachelbel, Bartolucci and Portelli. Gounod’s Ave Maria will be interpreted on the saxophone by an emerging young chorister Philip Attard.
An instrumental composition in three movements by the young talented Maltese composer Paul Portelli, entitled Reflections on Ave Maria, will also be premiered by the Jubilate Ensemble.
Mro Portelli, who is from Żurrieq, has written various compositions for the choir, which has also performed his pieces abroad.
In 2003, the choir took part in the Festival Rencontres Musicales de Méditerranée, in Corsica, France. The choir also travelled to Italy in 2007 and Austria in 2009, where it performed in prestigious venues such as the Vatican, St Francis Basilica of Assisi and St Stephen’s Cathedral.
The choir, which is led by Stefan Attard, specialises in sacred polyphony, and is perhaps best known for having introduced the Christmas event ‘Carols by Candlelight’ in Malta.
Those attending are advised to arrive early at the church to avoid disappointment.
