Franz Beckenbauer has been elected as an honorary member of the German Football League – the DFL – at their annual general meeting.
The honorary president of Bayern Munich, who was given a testimonial match which saw Bayern beaten in a penalty shoot-out by Real Madrid last Friday, was overwhelmingly voted into the DFL at the meeting in Berlin.
“Franz Beckenbauer has done great service to the Bundesliga over a number of decades,” explained DFL president Dr Reinhard Raubal.
“He deserves respect and recognition for his achievements. He is the only person in the history of the Bundesliga to have won the German title as a player, as a coach and as a president.”
Former Bayern and Borussia Dortmund coach Ottmar Hitzfeld was given an honorary prize to reward him for his services to the Bundesliga.
Hitzfeld won seven Bundesliga titles as well as lifting the Champions League both with Dortmund and Bayern.
