Tamara Vella (left) had good reason to be cheerful yesterday after recording a personal best in the 100m at the Youth Olympic Games. Running in heat four at the Bishan Stadium, the Maltese sprinter dashed home in 13.11 seconds to fractionally better her previous best mark of 13.12.

Vella was sixth among seven athletes, finishing ahead of Kiribati’s Tio Etita (14.59). Britain’s Annie Tagoe won the heat in 11.78 seconds. Maltese participation in Singapore resumes tomorrow when swimmer Mark Sammut takes part in the 200m backstroke heats.
