For the third successive year, the Mellieħa Local Council honoured the athletes and officials who excelled in their sport this year. The 2010 Sportivi Melleħin event took place recently at the village’s Greek Theatre.
A judging panel, comprising sports journalists from different media, voted for the winners in six categories from a list of 18 nominees.
William Chetcuti (shooting) and Tania Bugeja (netball) were named Mellieħa’s sportsman and sportswoman of the year respectively while Vincent Debono, the owner of popular horse In Vitro du Bourg, claimed the best official award.
Mellieħa Northenders (baseball) won the team prize and Raymond Bartolo, the Northenders’ team manager, received the best sporting act award. Young shooter Darren Vella was voted Mellieħa’s most promising athlete.
In his address, Robert Cutajar, the mayor of Mellieħa, spoke about the council’s investment in sports infrastructure, most notably the Family Park which is currently under construction. This park will house a number of facilities, including a multi-purpose court that can be used for basketball, netball, volleyball and tennis.
At the end of the awards ceremony, councillor Edward Camilleri was presented with a special memento for his lifetime contribution to the promotion of sports in Mellieħa.
