There are no plans to inspect any Mazda models sold in Malta in spite of international reports that over 300,000 cars are being recalled in the US.

“We are not aware of anything so far. If we get any instructions from Mazda or if local models are affected, we will call each and every customer immediately,” said Robert Colbert, after-sales manager at Gasan Automotive.

Mazda Motor Corp announced on Tuesday night it was recalling thousands of Mazda 3 and Mazda 5 models, built from 2007 through 2009, because of a fault that could cause a “sudden loss” of power steering. The defect occurs because rust from a high-pressure pipe could strain the power steering pump and cause the system to shut down, Mazda said.

Earlier this year, hundreds of Honda and Toyota cars were inspected by their local agents following international safety recalls.
