Members of the Lifecycle Challenge team are expected to reach Germany today after an uphill struggle, literally.

The cyclists, now down to 41 after two sprained their knees, embarked on their feat from Venice on Monday, stopping in Lugano on Tuesday night. They left their refuge yesterday for a 140-kilometre trek that included a ride through four tunnels and across the St Gotthard Pass. They slept in huts in Altdorf last night.

They will be stopping at Villengen-Schwenningen today after a 186-kilometre trek.

The 2,020-kilometre, 12-day ride, named the Devil’s Highway, ends at Old Trafford, Manchester United’s football ground.

The cyclists include a number of foreigners who work in Malta and five from the UK. These joined the team in Venice.

Only one of the two female cyclists remains in the challenge.
