Around 90 waiters in the German city of Regensburg announced today an immediate ban on serving neo-Nazis after a gang of skinheads left a barman needing hospital treatment.

Six weeks ago the barman stepped in to protect a black woman and her child who were being abused by a group of neo-Nazis, according to organisers of the new initiative, known as "No Service for Nazis."

He ejected them but 10 days later he was badly assaulted by six to eight skinheads.

"It was clearly a revenge attack. We waiters want to show that neo-Nazis are not wanted and won't get served," said Juba Akili, one of the organisers.

The waiters who have become involved so far account for around half of the restaurants and pubs in the picturesque Bavarian city, 125 kilometres (80 miles) northeast of Munich.
