A gunman opened fire yesterday on a police station in Texas but died when officers returned fire in an incident that forced the city of McKinney to be put on lockdown, the authorities said.

“The suspect lit his pickup truck on fire in front of the police station and then he continued to go across the field into a wooded area and shot at the police department,” a McKinney police press officer told AFP.

“The suspect is confirmed deceased. There was a gunfire exchange between the officers and suspect but they’re not sure if it was a self-inflicted shot or shots from the officer that killed him.”

The incident happened right next to Collin College and the university said bullets from the incident entered a building on the campus but that no students, faculty or staff were injured.

“A gunman in a Ford pickup truck parked his vehicle, loaded with ammunition, in front of the McKinney Police Department before opening fire,” a statement on the Collin College website said.

“Gunfire was exchanged between the shooter and the McKinney police. It is confirmed that the gunman is dead. However, the cause of his death is uncertain,” the statement said.
