Dive enthusiasts in Lithuania have opened the country’s first underwater picture gallery, saying the waters of a lake in the west of the Baltic state unveil the beauty of art like nowhere on land.

Twenty large format photographs by local artists were put on display in lake Plateliai, western Lithuania while organisers say they plan to expand the project in the future to include stained-glass, water colour paintings as well as sculptures.

“Art is experienced totally differently in the water,” Andrius Albrikas, head of local diving academy, said yesterday.

Bored with diving the same locations over and over again, local divers came up with the idea for the underwater gallery after a couple from a local diving club put their wedding picture underwater to enjoy it every time they dive. (AFP)

Ambulance moved

A taxi driver was arrested after he got behind the wheel of an ambulance answering an emergency call and moved it to make way for his own vehicle.

Officers attended the incident after the ambulance crew reported their vehicle had been driven away from outside an address in East Sussex, as they were preparing to take a one-month-old baby to hospital yesterday.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “They reported at 12.40 a.m. that a taxi driver had objected to the road being temporarily obstructed, so he had just got into their ambulance and drove it a short distance up the road, before driving away in his own taxi. The ambulance crew retrieved their vehicle and took the baby to hospital.” (PA)

Power cut

A beauty salon owner in Mississippi blamed an unexpected power cut for turning a customer bald.

Tessa Mingo, owner of People’s Choice Hair Salon in Bruce, said despite paying her electric bill she was suddenly cut off.

That meant there was no way to wash chemicals off a woman’s hair because the water heater was not working and she was left without hair on her head. (PA)

‘Don’t chase the thieves’

UK Police were ordered not to chase motorbike thieves because of health and safety fears for the raiders.

The three-strong gang were not wearing crash helmets when they roared off on stolen motorbikes worth £20,000 following the raid at a showroom in Altrincham, Greater Manchester.

In line with national police policy, officers do not give chase to suspects on motorbikes if they are not wearing helmets because it is deemed too dangerous to the rider. (PA)

Hendrix hat on show

One of Jimi Hendrix’s trademark hats is going on show at an exhibition about his life.

The wide-brimmed hat, worn by the guitar legend on the cover of his album Smash Hits, is part of the exhibition at the Handel House Museum in London which marks the 40th anniversary of his death.

Exhibits also include a bright orange jacket worn by Hendrix during some of his UK gigs and his travel directions to the Isle of Wight Festival, which was the scene of one of his final performances.

Hendrix lived in an upstairs flat, which is now part of the museum, in the 1960s. He died on September 18, 1970. (PA)
