Jockeys competing in the Palio race in Siena, Italy, yesterday. The Palio of Siena race known as Il Palio is held twice a year. Jockeys ride bareback around a makeshift race course set up in the city’s central square.

What a farce it was. I happened to watch on end the race to start but this took quite a long time because one of the horses could not be controlled at the starting line. After more than half an hour the race took only a few minutes to end in frenetic joy for the winner and his supporters. Isn't this race a typical example of cruelty to animals?
