A pony trapped inside a stable in Naxxar that had caught fire was freed in the nick of time by passers-by on Sunday.
Eyewitnesses said they saw the fire spread from an unused field to the adjacent stable housing two horses and three dogs in Margaret Murray Street, Naxxar.
Joined by other people who happened to be driving by, they broke into the shed and freed a horse and the dogs. However, the pony, which happened to be closest to the fire, already had burning patches and these were immediately extinguished with water.
A police spokesman said the animals’ owner called for a vet to attend to the pony as officers who came on the scene were about to call one themselves.
The fire, which was eventually put out by firemen, was found to have been caused naturally, the spokesman said.

i paul alford james mifsud and barry saw these stables on fire.they tried to break the gate down .so i and a another man jumped over the gates seeing tis pony being burned alive.we pulled the balcony fence away after 3minutes burning our hands.then st the dogs free. my friend barry took the shetland which was burned from head to toe and his ears was melted away. he put 20 buckets off water on him poor animal. i then smashed the lock on the second caged door and took the other pony on the road to saftey.the police came and the firemen as well. iwa very angry as it took 1and a half hours for the vet to come. i was aproffesional jockey for 27 years and never seen something bad as this.i found out the poni was put down on monday morning after 16 hours of suffering.if i had a gun i would of shot him there and then.i wish thepoeople take more care of their animals and not chained up or fenced in balcony frames to walls. the poni might of lived if it had space.
