A man suspected of involvement in an attempted theft from Sterling Jewellers in Tower Road, Sliema, was arrested this morning after the staff foiled the crime.

Informed sources said that two men, a Maltese and a foreigner, entered the shop. While one of them distracted the staff, the other grabbed jewellery.

The staff quickly realised what was happening. As the two tried to escape, one of them, a Maltese man, was stopped by two Britons - off duty policemen who are here on holiday. The other got away. His haul is thought to be small.

The incident happened at about 10.40 a.m.

Jewellery and cash were stolen from a hold-up at a Sterling Jewellery outlet in St Julian's at the end of June. The thief had escaped on foot.
