A 61-year-old British woman was critically injured when she was hit by a car while on a zebra crossing at Tower Road Sliema, late on Sunday.

A witness told The Times how he heard, “the most horrible sound” when the woman was hit. He ran to the site of the accident and saw her in a pool of blood, conscious and screaming.

A crowd quickly gathered at the site of the incident, according to the witness.

Luckily, someone helped out until the ambulance came, the witness said.

The woman was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital and found to be critical. Her condition stabilised yesterday but she remained in intensive care.

The car was being driven by a 26-year-old man from Lija.

Magistrate Giovanni Grixti is holding an inquiry.
