A Dutch bar owner ended up in hot water after he became violent when the police tried to stop him from smoking in his own establishment on Sunday morning.
The man, Aarnoud De Hamer, 43, of St Paul’s Bay, violently resisted the police, threatened them, slightly injured an officer, refused to give his particulars, was drunk in public and littered the street.
Police Inspector Therese Sciberras told Magistrate Doreen Clarke that this was not the first time that he had acted up with police and that he needed a punishment that would teach him a lesson.
Mr De Hamer told the court that he was sorry for his actions and that he wanted to apologise to the police officers involved.
Magistrate Clarke jailed him for five months suspended for two years.
