I wish to convey my sincere condolences to the family of Guido de Marco and the Maltese for the loss of a great gentleman and politician. He and I started our schooling together at the Sisters of St Joseph, who were then in Zachary Street, Valletta, back in the 1930s. Our secondary education went different ways; he went to St Aloysius, I to the Lyceum.

In the early 1950s I migrated to Australia. I next meet him on one of my visits to Malta. He was then Minister for Foreign Affairs. All those intervening years were just like hours. He remembered many details. One could feel his warmth of heart. One could feel that one is in the presence of a great human being but at the same time he never made one feel uncomfortable.

Goodbye, Guido. God grant him eternal rest…
