Landslides caused by an earthquake today left several people injured on one of the Aeolian islands off of Sicily, the ANSA news agency reported.

The quake measured 4.5 degrees on the Richter scale, a public safety official told AFP.

It struck shortly before 3:00 pm (1300 GMT) some six kilometres (3.5 miles) from Lipari island, ANSA said.

The National Geophysical and Vulcanoly Institute said the tremor's epicentre was some 19 kilometres deep.
