Horse suffers burns in Naxxar
A horse suffered burns this evening when a grass fire spread to stables near the Birguma bypass in Naxxar.
The incident happened at about 5.15 p.m.
People driving by on seeing that there were two horses in the stables broke into the premises to rescue them.
A Shetland pony suffered burns while the other horse was not injured. A Briton who is an experienced horse handler and happened to be passing by helped to calm the horse and a vet was called.
The blaze was extinguished by fire-fighters of the Civil Protection Department.

These people deserve recognition and to be publicly commended for their selfless action. If they had not come to the rescue, the story would have had another ending. Well done and rest assured you have our gratitude for your caring and heroic intervention.

The people who stopped to save the horses should be named and publicly praised and thanked. It is not every day that you meet people so courageous and so altruistic. If you are reading this piece, well done and God love you, on behalf of animals!

This will remind us that animals are part of us, and sometimes we have to sacrifice even our life to save them. To risk your life for animals is a big deal, and should be appreciated. I agree that those involved should be recognized and awarded.

'People driving by on seeing that there were two horses in the stables broke into the premises to rescue them.' Personally this was a heroic gesture, I suggest the President of the Republic to recognise these individuals and handle them the 'Gieh ir-Republika' with immediate effect. Promoting animal welfare should be concrete and truly at a national level.

Well Said Anthony. We need to educate more people about the love we all should give to the animals. Some tougher laws will help. Well Doe to all involved

Seriously?? It seems that whenever something positive happens on this island, someone ALWAYS has to come up with the brilliant idea of giving the "Gieh ir-Repubblika". Sir, these people did go out of their way to do an extremely excellent gesture and should be heavily praised for their actions, definitely - but "Gieh ir-Repubblika" is way too far. That is an award which should be reserved for incredible feats of benefit to the whole country - which is what makes it a special award.
Again, wonderful gesture by the people involved, and in NO WAY am I discounting their bravery and courage. But please don't exaggerate... Gieh ir-Repubblika!!!

John Abela
so rescuing animals is not a commendable gesture?
I guess you never experienced the unconditional love of an animal, hence your comment.
I strongly suggest that you do. Life is better when animals are in it!

M. Vella,
On the contrary, I have had several animals over the years and consider myself a huge animal lover - I would rather see myself come to harm rather than my pets. My point was that even though the action is very, very highly commendable, "Gieh ir-Repubblika" is stretching it way too far - maybe an award of lesser significance should be considered.

@ Abela: These animals are part of this country, how we treat and respect animals is a direct reflection how we treat one another. These animals have no vote so I take it they have no rights, right Mr Abela?
Mr Abela I have two quotes for you this morning and hope you will be inspired by their depth of thought.
Quote 1: The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated (Mohandas Gandhi)
Quote 2: Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened (Anatole France)
Mr Abela I invite your soul to wake up, in the meantime I wish you a glorious summer holiday in the luxury of some shade, air conditioned environment, running water availability... exactly just like the recently abandoned goats and cows, like horses with no sheds in Valletta... do I need to go on?

Well said John Abela, and yes animals make a huge difference in ones life M. Vella but hold onto your breath for "Gieh ir-Repubblika". When ppl save others from drowning don't they deserve it too? When ppl are rescued from accidents don't they deserve it too? alahares we give it for every good deed.

What a sad and unfortunate story...I hope the injured horse will not be put down due to his injuries hoping that they are not serious or life threatening that would require such a drastic action. Pls do keep us posted and let us know.

bad day for horses today. I was at the horse racing in the streets of rabat gozo and this horse crashed down, skinning both rear legs. He could barly stand on his feet. After a distressing half hour his handlers managed to load him in his truck and took him hopefully for recovery.
And now this poor shetland.
Hope both horses make a full recovery from their ordeal

I was at the scene, when we tried to enter the premises to rescue the animals, I was Shocked when I saw that the pony is already burnt. Hope that he will be fine...
And Sorry for any damages made to the owner to enter the premises.
