The United States has agreed to cut Brazil’s debt repayments by $21 million, which will now be used to protect the country’s forests, the Treasury Department said.

The two Western Hemisphere powers “signed a debt-for-nature agreement today to reduce Brazil’s debt payments to the United States by close to $21 million over the next five years,” the Treasury said.

“In return, the government of Brazil has committed these funds to support grants to protect the country’s tropical forests.”
